About Company

Background

The International Assistance Mission (IAM) was established in Kabul, on February 2, 1966. It began with the efforts of teachers and medical specialists who were interested in working in Afghanistan. IAMs first projects were the National Organization for Ophthalmic Rehabilitation (NOOR), the Medical Assistance Program (MAP), a school for the visually impaired (BINA), and a literacy program. Over the next 50 years, more projects were added in engineering, maternal health, community development, English as a Foreign Language (EFL), disaster management, micro-enterprise development, mental health, and the study of languages. IAM trains Afghans in all of these roles.

Overview

First, the war with the Soviet Union, then strife between local Mujahideen groups, and then changes in government required the moving or closing of some projects at various times since 1966. In 1978, the International Afghan Mission changed its name to the International Assistance Mission.

In August 2001, the Taliban expelled IAM from Afghanistan. One month later, due to the imminent attack from the USA following September 11, 2001; the Taliban expelled all aid groups from Afghanistan. After the fall of the Taliban, IAM was invited to return. This three-month period in 2001 is the only time that IAM has not served in Afghanistan since 1966.

What we do

We work in Afghanistan to transform lives and build capacity in the sectors of eye care, development, education and health.

Eye care

Eye care was IAMs first project in Afghanistan. We started this work in 1966, and since then we’ve been working to make high-quality eye care accessible and affordable for all people in Afghanistan. We focus particularly on training mid-level eye care professionals, as well as ophthalmologists, providing skilled professionals to serve the people of Afghanistan – a country where the World Health Organization estimates that 1.5 million people are visually impaired and 400,000 people are blind.

Development

IAM is working to tackle poverty and injustice in Afghanistan, giving some of the poorest communities the opportunity to thrive.

We are helping to improve food security, fight infant and maternal mortality, and improve access to clean water and good sanitation; we’re running literacy, peacebuilding and community leadership courses; and we’re helping families improve their finances and empowering communities to develop and thrive.

Education

Through our Female Teacher Education Project, Silk Road English Centre, and Peacebuilding Project, we are working to help Afghans reach their full potential. We’re currently focusing on improving the accessibility and quality of education in villages (particularly for girls), equipping future leaders with English skills, and advocating for peace in Afghanistan.

Health

We want to end the stigma surrounding mental health in Afghanistan and ensure those struggling with mental health issues have access to the help they need. IAMs Mental Health Programmed is based in the western region of Afghanistan and was started in 1996 in response to a high suicide rate among women. We are working in advocacy and media, helping to train medical professionals and communities about mental health, and connecting people with services.

Core values

Dependency on God

We recognize that only with Gods guidance and help can we do anything worthwhile.

Love for All

We believe every human being has the same God-given value and therefore deserves our love and care. We will therefore not discriminate but treat everyone with respect, paying special attention to those most marginalized.

Teamwork

We will utilize a participatory approach, involving all concerned, particularly the intended beneficiaries, and will encourage everyone to contribute according to their strengths.

Accountability

We will do what we say and what is right, be transparent about what we do and that will be subject to internal and external evaluation.

Learning

We encourage continuous learning, raising questions and seeking answers that throw new light on the complex issues that affect the lives of Afghans.

Quality Work

While aiming at excellence we will seek to use resources effectively and deliver sustainable, long-term results through capacity building and transformation.
